Main Street Town Hall, May 27, 2021

NOTE: The Town Hall, facilitated by Missouri Main Street Connection was held on Thursday, May 27th at the Restoration Church Natatorium, Downtown St. Joseph. Attendees received the following email the day after the event.

__________

Greetings, and thank you sincerely for attending the Main Street Saint Joseph Town Hall!

In case I didn't get to meet you last night, my name is Dana Massin and I am the VP of Main Street Saint Joseph, as well as the Chair of the Organization Committee.

You may recall from last night's presentation, the Organization Committee is tasked with building the "people & relationships" part of our local Main Street program. You may also recall--if you stuck around until the end of the evening--that the primary goals identified by our Organization brainstorming group* were as follows:

  1. Cultivate and nurture relationships: Earn the trust of our community through our actions, words and outcomes, and strive for unity in all that we do;
  2. Identify, clear, realistic, achievable, measurable goals and outcomes;
  3. Frequent communications focused on:
    • measurable goals/outcomes (transparency)
    • celebration of milestones big and small
    • building community pride; living our shared values
    • promoting unity
  4. Accountability of Main Street Leadership: Demonstrate respect for the time and opinions of our volunteers and community members.
  5. Promote and build community pride in all of our endeavors
*To learn about all of the "Wildly Important Goals" aka "WIGs" established in each breakout group, please visit our blog post, Saint Joseph Wildly Important Goals (aka "WIGs")

With the above well established, I felt it important to reach out to you all and not only thank you for your time and input last night, but also give you a glimpse into what comes next.

Ben White with Missouri Main Street Connection speaks to an audience of over 100 community leaders, volunteers, downtown business/building owners and stakeholders.

WHAT COMES NEXT...
  • Missouri Main Street Connection (Keith and Ben, the facilitators of last night's town hall...) have taken the feedback from each breakout group and will use it to help our local Board shape our first community goals.
  • Our local Board has a number of housekeeping items that are still TBD, including how to best stay in touch with our community members, forming committees, board member orientation & training, and several other tasks that Missouri Main Street Connection will walk us through.
  • Our Board currently meets virtually, on the second Thursday of each month at 4pm. Our next board meeting is Thursday 4pm-6pm. We also expect to schedule board training/orientation with Missouri Main Street in the next month.
The next few weeks of activities for our board will get us acclimated to our new board roles, committee roles, and help us learn from the Main Street model how to best serve you all and the St. Joseph community at large.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT...

Our board will be working these next few weeks/months to establish communication channels, structures, frequency, timelines etc, but until that time, I ask for your patience as we hammer out all of these initial details. We may also ask for your input on these things in the next few weeks. At a minimum, you can expect a followup email from me on FRIDAY, JUNE 18TH giving you an update on our status and how/if you can get involved in next steps!

WHAT YOU CAN DO...

Eager to get involved asap? Our committee chairs will soon be busy gathering the names of interested parties for the four committees: Organization, Design, Promotion & Economic Vitality. Maybe you were jazzed by the discussion in your breakout group, or maybe the presentation on a particular committee aligned with your personal or professional interests. If you'd like to learn more about one of the four aforementioned committees, please reply to this email, indicate your interest, and I'll connect you with the Chair for that committee!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your indication of interest in any committee does NOT obligate you to anything long term. We, as a board, as committee chairs, and as the first facilitators of Main Street development are committed to demonstrating our respect for your time and input. As such, we understand there is a big difference between, "Keep me posted on the ___ committee!" versus, "By submitting my name, I'm volunteering for all the things!" << (Yikes! That's not our style...)

The onus is on us to prove to you that your involvement in a Main Street committee is a good use of your time, and that the goals we create together can be achieved together. With these things in mind, I do hope you will consider adding yourself to a committee communication list. At the least, you'll be on track to learn more about a particular committee; at most, perhaps you'll find yourself in a position to help us contribute to setting and meeting shared community goals.

I want to thank you again for your time, both at last night's Town Hall, and in reading this email.

For the time being, you can consider me, Dana Massin, your direct line to concerns, questions or updates on Main Street Saint Joseph. I encourage you to email me, call, or text using the contact info below. I will be available to reply to you Tue-Sat 11am-6pm.

I'll look forward to sharing another update email with you no later than Friday, June 18th.

Have a wonderful, safe holiday weekend.
